FELTEX FOAM CONVERTING

Feltex Foam Converting produces a wide range of polyester and polyether flexible, semi-rigid and rigid thermo-formable polyurethane foams. Its core competency is the production of polyurethane slabstock.

Products
Feltex Foam Converting produces in excess of 1500 tons of slabstock per annum, with an 80:20 split between polyether and polyester products. About 70 percent of polyether and 90 percent of polyester products are for the automotive market.

Feltex Foam Converting supplies 75% of the South African automotive sector's foam requirements. Its products are also used by the acoustics, apparel, filtration, footwear and leisure industries.

Technology
Feltex Foam Converting manufactures slabstock on a high-pressure Hennecke UBT 500 machine. A semi-automated BFM plant produces specialist runs of low volume foam to support development activities while peeling is conducted on the Albrecht Baumer 50 meter loop-peeler, converting slabstock into rollstock which varies in thickness from 1,5mm to 20mm. The fully automated and computerised Fecken-Kirfel CNC and Investronica machines convert foam through precision contour cutting. Chipfoam® (and rebond) foam blocks are manufactured on site from scrap generated by daily production runs.

A Plama peeled foam compression machine ensures economical transportation of the roll stock product. While the weight does not change, compressed foam means that more linear metres (l/mt) can be transported within the same container. For example, a compression set of 90% will yield, on average, an increase in transport capacity of 45%. Once opened, the foam recovers to its normal size depending on the grade of foam, compression set and time under compression.
